What a base plate actually does
A base plate is the steel plate fixed at the bottom of a parking shade column. It creates a wider, controlled connection between the vertical steel column and the concrete foundation. Instead of concentrating the structural forces through the narrow column section, the plate helps distribute them into the supporting concrete.
The plate also provides positions for anchor bolts, which hold the column to the foundation and resist movement caused by wind and other loads.

A visible base plate can make alignment and inspection easier, but it still needs suitable anchors, grout or bearing detail, welding and protective coating. An embedded column needs careful foundation and corrosion detailing.
