MS steel or GI steel: the practical answer

Neither MS nor GI is automatically the best material for every car parking shade. Mild steel is highly practical for custom fabrication, welding, curved frames and architectural designs. Galvanized steel offers an added zinc barrier that generally improves resistance to corrosion, especially in humid, coastal or continuously exposed locations. The correct choice depends on the environment, structure, fabrication method, protective finish, maintenance plan and total budget.

For many UAE villa shades, properly prepared MS steel with a quality epoxy primer and exterior topcoat performs very well. For projects near the sea, irrigation, pools, industrial moisture or locations where future repainting will be difficult, hot-dip galvanized steel may offer better long-term protection. The structural size and grade still need to be selected by design; galvanizing protects the surface but does not make an undersized column structurally stronger.

What is MS steel?

MS means mild steel, a low-carbon steel commonly used for columns, trusses, beams, base plates and support members. It is popular because it can be cut, rolled, drilled and welded into almost any parking-shade form. Cantilever shades, decorative frames, curved trusses and large custom carports are frequently fabricated from MS pipes, tubes and plates.

Bare mild steel reacts with oxygen and moisture and can rust, so it must not be left unprotected outdoors. A professional coating system normally includes surface cleaning, rust removal or abrasive preparation where specified, a compatible primer and one or more exterior finish coats. Epoxy primer provides a strong protective base, while the final topcoat gives colour and additional weather resistance. Good preparation matters as much as the paint brand: coating over oil, mill scale, loose rust or poor welding will shorten the life of the finish.

What is GI or galvanized steel?

GI commonly means galvanized iron, although most modern structural products are actually galvanized steel. The steel is protected by zinc, which forms a barrier between the base metal and the environment. Zinc also provides sacrificial protection: when a small area is scratched, the surrounding zinc can help protect the exposed steel within limits.

There is an important difference between pre-galvanized material and hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication. Pre-galvanized tubes are coated before cutting and welding, so cut edges and welded areas require suitable zinc-rich repair. With after-fabrication hot-dip galvanizing, the completed steelwork is immersed in molten zinc, allowing the coating to cover most accessible surfaces. The design must include drainage and vent holes, and dimensions must suit the galvanizing process. A quotation should clearly state which galvanizing method and coating requirement are included instead of using only the word GI.

How UAE weather affects outdoor steel

The UAE combines intense sun, high surface temperatures, dust, occasional rain and, in many areas, significant humidity. Coastal districts in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and the Northern Emirates can also expose steel to airborne salts. Salt and moisture accelerate corrosion when they remain on damaged, unprotected or poorly detailed surfaces.

Desert locations may have less salt exposure, but dust can collect around base plates, horizontal ledges and roof joints. When dust mixes with condensation, irrigation water or rain, it holds moisture against the steel. Areas beside gardens, swimming pools, washing zones and air-conditioning drainage can therefore be more aggressive than they appear. Shade columns fixed where water regularly stands are at higher risk regardless of whether the main structure is MS or GI. Correct drainage, sealed joints and raised, well-detailed bases are essential.

Corrosion protection and expected maintenance

In a dry inland location with easy access for inspection, coated MS steel can be a cost-effective and durable solution. The owner should check scratches, weld seams, base plates, bolts and places where water collects. Small coating failures should be cleaned and repaired before rust spreads under the surrounding paint. Scheduled maintenance is much cheaper than waiting until the steel has heavy scaling or section loss.

Galvanized steel normally needs less frequent coating maintenance because zinc protects the surface. However, it is not maintenance-free. Acidic cleaners, salt deposits, contact with incompatible metals, trapped moisture and aggressive pool chemicals can attack the zinc. Welded or cut areas must be repaired correctly. In premium architectural projects, a duplex system—galvanizing plus a compatible paint or powder-coating system—can provide both colour and enhanced protection, but surface preparation and product compatibility must follow the coating supplier's specification.

Strength, fabrication and design flexibility

People sometimes assume GI is stronger than MS, but the corrosion coating alone does not determine structural capacity. Strength depends on the steel grade, pipe or tube dimensions, wall thickness, member shape, weld design, bolts, bracing, foundations and the loads applied to the shade. Two visually similar columns can have very different capacity if their thickness or grade is different.

MS is usually easier for one-off fabrication and site modifications. Fabricators can form curved trusses, decorative screens, cantilever arms and custom connections, then prepare and paint the finished assembly. Galvanized work needs more planning. Welding galvanized steel requires controlled procedures, ventilation and proper safety measures because heated zinc produces hazardous fumes; welding also damages the local coating and creates an area that needs zinc-rich repair. When a completed frame will be hot-dip galvanized, its size, venting, drainage and distortion risk should be considered before fabrication.

Appearance, cost and value over the project life

Painted MS offers almost unlimited colour choice and can match a villa façade, gate, pergola or corporate identity. Its smooth architectural finish is a major reason it remains popular for visible parking structures. Standard galvanized steel has a silver-grey, sometimes mottled appearance, although it can be overcoated when the correct preparation and compatible system are used.

MS generally has a lower initial material and fabrication cost for custom work, while hot-dip galvanizing adds processing, transport and detailing costs. Initial price is only one part of the decision. A coastal commercial shade that is difficult to access may justify the extra investment in galvanizing because shutdowns, scaffolding and repainting can be expensive. At an inland villa where the owner can inspect and touch up the frame, a well-coated MS structure may provide better value. Compare the complete specification, not just the price per square metre.

Which one is best for each use?

For custom villa carports, decorative cantilever shades, curved structures and projects requiring an exact colour, MS with proper surface preparation, epoxy primer and a durable exterior topcoat is often the practical choice. For coastal parking, public facilities, industrial sites, exposed rooftop frames, wet service areas or structures with limited maintenance access, hot-dip galvanized steel deserves strong consideration. A duplex galvanized-and-painted system may be appropriate where both long-term protection and a selected colour are required.

The roof material also affects the steel design. HDPE knitted fabric, PVC membrane, sandwich panels and flat metal panels create different loads and connection details. Wind uplift can be critical on large canopies, so columns, trusses, base plates, anchor bolts and concrete foundations must work as one system. Choosing GI cannot compensate for weak anchors, thin sections, poor welding or an inadequate foundation, and expensive paint cannot correct bad drainage.

What to confirm before accepting a quotation

Ask the contractor to write the steel grade, member sizes, wall thicknesses, base-plate dimensions, anchor-bolt details and foundation scope in the quotation. For MS, confirm the surface preparation, primer type, number of coats and exterior finish. For GI, confirm whether it is pre-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, the required coating standard or thickness, and how cut or welded areas will be repaired.
